From the moment I first stepped onto a stage as a child, I felt alive in a way I never did at school. Music gave me confidence, connection, and a voice, while my Grandad, a self-taught musician, showed me that musicality lives in the soul, not just the syllabus. However, as I grew older, I also felt the sting of not belonging in a musical world where access, privilege, and “rules” seemed to matter more than joy. I burned out, I lost my way and I almost gave up.

What brought me back was the realisation that music isn’t a privilege for the lucky few. It’s a birthright. My work as a teacher for the past 25 years has been about helping people, (from shy children to retired adults who were overlooked for musical opportunities the first time around), to find their voice, feel safe to explore, and experience the joy of music without judgement, shame, or perfectionism.

I created this free challenge for parents like you, who understand all the benefits (cognitive, social and health-related) of learning about and experiencing music, so that I can empower you to give your child the gift of joy through music, even if you’ve never had musical training yourself.

I know it can feel intimidating, even overwhelming, not knowing where to start. That’s why I’ve designed these playful, easy-to-do activities around six pieces of music, chosen to spark your child’s imagination, strengthen their listening skills, and help them begin to think musically.

Along the way, you’ll discover that your curiosity and encouragement are far more important to start this journey than technical knowledge.
